Wine-lovers rejoice! Your trip to the Berkshires just got a whole lot tastier!
It may come as a surprise to some that the Berkshires have wineries, but to our delight, there are actually a number of wineries here and they are fantastic. And not only are there wineries to visit, the are also some pretty amazing cideries in the Berkshires, too.
Did you know that May 25th is National Drink Wine Day? We didn’t either, but it has us excited! As many of our guests know, we enjoy hosting a wine and cheese reception every evening at The Inn at Stockbridge and we like to offer local wines whenever possible. While staying here, why not plan a little winery/cidery tour of your own around the Berkshires so that you can sample all of the delicious flavors that our region has to offer? Here are our suggestions of where to go.
Wineries & Cideries in the Berkshires:
Hilltop Orchards & Furnace Brook Winery
Located in Richmond, MA, the Hilltop Orchards & Furnace Brook Winery is a local favorite for delicious wines, pies, cider donuts, and outdoor recreation. Visit this orchard and vineyard year-round and experience something different during each season. Go for a hike or bike ride through the trails in the summer, apple picking in the fall, cross-country skiing or snowshoeing in the winter, and delicious wine tastings throughout the year. Visit their website and find some delicious recipes that can be made with their fresh apples and cider as well. The tasting room and farm store are open daily from 9 AM to 5 PM.
Raven Hollow Winery
Raven Hollow Winery in Westfield, MA, believes in allowing nature to be their guide as they develop some of the most unique types of wines around. Specializing in fruit wines, Raven Hollow has perfected their craft with favorites like strawberry rhubarb wine, apple wine, and peach wine. There is a tasting room at Raven Hollow open year-round, with extended hours throughout the summer season. Connected to Kosinski Farms, this winery offers farm-fresh snack plates and baked goods for purchase. They host many events for visitors to enjoy, including paint & sip nights and live music throughout the summer weekly. If you’ve ever wanted to try wines made from anything but grapes, Raven Hollow is the place to go!
Owned and operated by a talented husband and wife duo, Carr’s Ciderhouse offers everything from hard cider to apple cider syrup and cider vinegar creations. They currently do not have a tasting room at their orchard on the northwest slope of Mt. Warner in Hadley, MA, but can be found at farmers markets every Saturday throughout the summer offering interested patrons with tastings of their creations. Be sure to check out their website for where you can find that at local farmers markets this summer
Les Trois Emme Vineyard & Winery
Named for the first three granddaughters of the owners Mary Jane & Wayne Eline, Les Trois Emme Vineyard & Winery offers wonderful winery tours, personalized to each guest’s preference. Interested in learning about every detail of the wine process from start to finish or simply intrigued to watch the process unfold in front of your eyes? This Berkshires winery lets you decide how much you want to learn. Each tour of the winery includes a tasting of up to 5 wines of choice and complimentary hors d’oeuvres to enjoy. Enjoy a wine tasting in the tasting room, open from late April until the fall season. Guests are encouraged to bring a packed lunch and sit outside while enjoying the views of the vineyard. As Les Trois Emme declares, “you will never forget your visit.”
Unlike other wineries and cideries in the Berkshires, Balderdash Cellars grows the grapes for their wines in two regions in California, so their wines are a bit different from the flavors you’ll experience elsewhere in our area. Located in Richmond, MA, the tasting room is open on the weekends in the afternoon and there is often live music for guests to enjoy. Owned by husband and wife Christian and Donna Hanson, the crew at Balderdash Cellars is dedicated to creating wines that satisfy any palate. And if you have someone traveling with you that prefers craft beers over wine, there is always 2 rotating beers on tap from Wandering Star Brewery for them to sample.
If you visiting the Berkshires and love sampling wines from local wineries and cideries, be sure to check out the ones we’ve mentioned. You won’t be disappointed. And as always, please exercise your best judgment and do not drink and drive. Here’s to your next Berkshires wine & cider tour, cheers!
