Stop the presses: Tanglewood 2021 is officially on for summer with live, in person performances, July 9th through August 16th. They will announce the full season on April 8th, with tickets going on sale to the public May 17th.
It has been a long wait, and we’re not out of the woods yet, but this news is a real breath of fresh air and a happy addition to an already lovely spring.
The COVID-19 pandemic saw the cancellation of Tanglewood 2020, along with almost everything else 2020. The fate of Tanglewood 2021 has remained hopeful but in doubt ever since. The March 19th announcement of the annual festival’s cautious return was a real surprise but also a most welcome one.
Tanglewood is just ten minutes from the front door of The Inn at Stockbridge, our Berkshires bed and breakfast. So many Berkshires getaways are planned around Tanglewood Music Festival. We love nothing more than helping to make that happen. If Tanglewood is part of your summertime plans, be sure to let us know!
Those familiar with past Tanglewood Festivals will notice that this year’s event is only six weeks long. The reduced Tanglewood 2021 season also only features around 50% of the performances of a normal season. Precautions in place to keep everyone safe and healthy during the festival.
Other precautions include limiting performances to no more than 80 minutes and doing away with intermissions. Performances are at reduced capacity and in open-air settings, such as on the lawn or at Koussevitzky Music Shed. These and other measures will all be in place to ensure physical distancing protocols and help reduce potential exposure to the virus.
It’s still an exciting announcement, despite the planned reductions in schedule and capacity. This year’s festival still promises plenty to look forward to. BSO Music Director Andris Nelsons will lead the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 6 performances and the TMC Orchestra in two. The BSO will present both a Saturday evening and a Sunday afternoon series. Friday evenings will feature recitals, special guest artists, ensembles, and the Boston Pops. Monday evenings will see a Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra series.
They will announce the full schedule for Tanglewood 2021 on April 8th. Tickets go on sale May 17th.
2021 Tanglewood Popular Artists Series
Ironically, all the 2020 Popular Artists performances rescheduled for 2021 have now either been postponed or canceled. They have suspended ticket sales for July and August performances pending further information.
Current ticketholders for June performances can expect to hear from the BSO. More information about the Tanglewood 2021 Popular Artists schedule will be released later this spring.
