Stockbridge, MA is like many small, New England towns. Quiet, friendly, and so picturesque that even today it looks right out of some Norman Rockwell painting. Of course, where Stockbridge differs is that it IS in Norman Rockwell’s work!
Norman Rockwell was born in New York City but loved the Berkshires. So much, in fact, that he spent the last 25 years of his life right here in Stockbridge. The town figured largely in his work and he drew lots of inspiration from the area. One of his most famous works, “Home For Christmas,” features an the unmistakable image of Stockbridge’s Main Street decorated for the holidays.
The painting, though not characteristic of Rockwell’s other work, became one of his most recognizable pieces and has come to symbolize the holiday season in America. Stockbridge’s Main Street has changed very little since the painting was completed in 1967. Consequently, recreating the scene is not too difficult – and one that you have to experience to believe.
