The Inn at Stockbridge, a place of home and hospitality since 1906
Step into the history of the Berkshires right here at the historic The Inn at Stockbridge – or venture out to explore the region’s historical places on your own. Here, there’s history around every corner. Innkeepers Lisa Morehouse and Jeff Bell took over the Stockbridge Inn in May of 2013 – but the Inn’s history began well before that. The classic Georgian-style mansion was built in 1906 as a private residence. The Inn was transformed with a restoration in 1982, the Cottage House was built in 1997 and the Barn was built in 2001. Beginning in 2017 the guest rooms went through extensive renovations with the comfort of today’s traveler in mind.
History of the Inn
While the Main House at this historic Stockbridge property wasn’t built until 1906, the history of the land upon which the Inn rests dates back to 1739, when one of Stockbridge’s original settler families, the Williams, came to the area with the hope of converting the Stockbridge Indians to Christianity. In 1906, Boston attorney Phillip Blagdon built the Main House in Georgian-style fashion for use as a summer cottage – though in today’s terms, mansion is more appropriate. The Blagdon family held the property until 1972, when it was sold a number of times before coming under the ownership of Karen Putnam, who turned the private residence into a guest house. Enter Lee and Don Weitz in 1982, who purchased the guest house and renamed it the Inn at Stockbridge, adding the owner’s quarters, and lovingly restoring this historic home along the way.
Since officially becoming the Inn at Stockbridge, the property has seen significant improvement to the Main House, as well as significant additions to its surrounding grounds. Ownership changed hands again in 1995 when Alice and Len Schiller purchased the Inn. During their time here, they decided to duplicate the architecture of the Main House, building the Cottage House in 1997 with four spacious Cottage Suites inside. In 2001, the barn was added to the estate with four additional luxury barn suites, all including private deck, king-size bed, double whirlpool and other wonderful amenities. In total, the Schillers dedicated 18 years as stewards of this historic Stockbridge B&B.
The Innkeepers, Lisa & Jeff
In 2013, Lisa Morehouse and Jeff Bell made the leap from 30-year IT backgrounds and long careers in the computer industry to the world of full-time innkeeping. Today, they’re dedicated to making their home yours, if only for a short time, as well as a place of warm Berkshire hospitality and exceptional service, one that you’ll return to again and again.
After weathering their first busy summer season, they got busy renovating and rejuvenating the Inn. The repeat visitors of the bed and breakfast noticed lots of changes the following summer, and there were more on the horizon. Jeff and Lisa’s goal continues being to create a warm and inviting atmosphere, with a focus on exemplary service, great food, and unparalleled hospitality.
A few pictures of Jeff and Lisa are below, highlighting their time at the Inn and global adventures before their inn-keeping days! Jeff is originally from India, with 20 years in England before finally landing to roost in the United States. Lisa is a New England girl at heart, raised in Connecticut. Wanderlust took her around the U.S. and the world before bringing her to the Berkshires. Jeff and Lisa met in Seoul, South Korea… ask them to tell you the story!
What our guests are saying…
Let’s start at the beginning. We were warmly greeted at the front door by Jeff and Lisa, the innkeepers, and given the “lay of the land”. The inn is beautifully decorated with extensive acreage. Our room was large and lovely with a huge bathroom and a fireplace. After a quick dip in the pool it was time for afternoon wine, cheese, grapes and other goodies along with some lively conversation with the other guests… thoroughly enjoyable. Jeff recommended a wonderful restaurant for dinner in downtown Stockbridge… In the morning, Lisa prepares the BEST breakfast!! Delicious scones, yummy fruit cup with yogurt and granola, and whatever Lisa is cooking. We had pumpkin pancakes …So good! She will also cook eggs to order. The waitstaff is very friendly too. Lisa also keeps cookies in the pantry during the day if you have a sweet tooth along with coffee and tea. We absolutely recommend The Inn at Stockbridge!
